How a GoldenCalyx Score Is Built

Transparency is our core. When the industry knows how we judge quality, everyone is forced to improve. This page documents every input that goes into a Verified Quality Score.

The Source of Truth

Every score starts with an on-site audit conducted against a fixed sampling protocol. Auditors upload facility observations and product samples; a Certificate of Analysis (COA) is attached for lab-verified cannabinoid and terpene values. Each submission is reviewed and approved by a GoldenCalyx admin before it becomes a public listing.

The Five Scored Metrics

A strain’s Verified Quality Score is the weighted sum of five independent metrics. Each metric is normalized to a 0–5 scale and contributes 20% of the final score.

MetricSourceRangeWeight
Total TerpenesCOA (lab)0.5–3.5%20%
Total Active CannabinoidsCOA (lab)10–35%20%
Cure QualitySmoke Test0–520%
Bag Appeal & TrichomesVisual Inspection0–520%
Facility RatingFacility Audit0–520%

Total THC% and Total CBD% are shown for transparency but do not count toward the score — we measure quality, not potency.

Weights are adjustable — buyers can re-weight these metrics when browsing strains to match their own priorities (e.g. weighting terpenes higher for flavor-driven sourcing).

Cure Quality (the Smoke Test)

Our smoke test is strictly controlled to eliminate hardware bias. Every sample is evaluated using:
  • Ultra-thin 1 1/4 rice rolling paper
  • A hand-rolled filter tip
  • A standard plastic grinder

Three criteria are scored on a 0–5 scale — Smooth smoke, Flavor clearly defined, and Light-colored ash — and one criteria is scored as pass/fail: Stays lit. The four criteria are averaged on a 0–5 scale.

Bag Appeal & Trichome Analysis

Product photography is captured inside a standardized light box with identical lighting geometry. Micro-photography uses the same high-resolution scope for every sample. Auditors evaluate:
  • Frosty trichome coverage
  • Quality of trim (with or without sugar leaves)
  • Mature trichome caps
  • Trichomes intact (>50%)
  • Oxidation level (none / some / oxidized)

Facility Rating

Auditors score the cultivation facility on four pillars: Trained Staff, Automation, In-house Measurements, and Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) maturity. Each pillar is rated 0–5. The facility rating is the simple average. We also capture qualitative observations covering SOPs, IPM, nutrient/flush logs, harvest protocol, drying climate control, curing duration and method, and packaging — all surfaced publicly so buyers can read the same report the admin reviewed.

Independence & Conflicts of Interest

GoldenCalyx operates the rating platform with full editorial independence from any cultivation or distribution interest being evaluated. When a potential conflict exists, the interested party is formally recused or the relationship is disclosed alongside the score. Read our full Conflict of Interest & Independence Statement.
